SBB Daily Briefing: Interpipe begins test production at Dneprosteel EAF

2 октября 2012
Interpipe, the Ukrainian seamless pipe and railway wheel producer, has begun test production at its new EAF meltshop at Dneprosteel, Steel Business Briefing learns from the company.
The company will begin commercial production of pipe billet in March 2012, as intended, taking a year to ramp up the shop close to the full 1.32m tonnes/year crude steel capacity. Concurrently, it will start phasing out all its four open hearth furnaces, whose combined capacity slightly exceeds 700,000 t/y, and aims to dismantle them all during this year, as previously reported.
By 2014, the subsequent doubling of the crude steel capacity will enable Interpipe to become almost 90% self-sufficient for pipemaking billet – compared to the current 30% - and ensure its 1m t/y capacity for seamless pipes is sufficiently utilised.
To feed its seamless pipe mills, Nizhnedneprovsky and Nikopol-based Niko Tubes, it has been sourcing up to 600,000 tonnes/year of billet from Ukraine’s Dzerzhinsky Dneprovsky Iron & Steel Works (DMKD) and Oskol steelworks (OEMK) in west Russia, as reported.
The full switch to the EAF route will have a positive impact on the company’s product mix, enabling it to develop and certify new steels and pipes, such as oil well casing pipe with API 5CT standard.
